After scoring four runs off the Red Sox in the seventh inning to tie the score, NY gave the lead right back in the eighth on a J.D. Martinez home run to right field that proved to be the game-winner for Boston.
This was a big game and one to forget for one the world's best goalies, Nashville's Pekka Rinne, who was pulled just over ten minutes into the first period after letting in two goals of the decidedly soft variety. Outpitched on this night by lefty Eduardo Rodriguez, he struck out five and did not walk a batter. And just kind of put a stop to them. "I told him to his face, 'We need a homer from you right here'".
Carson Smith was unavailable after throwing in three straight games and Matt Barnes pitched the sixth, so Heath Hembree took the seventh and loaded the bases with only one out. "The cut fastball for him has been a game-changer". "I just missed it".
Kelly atoned for a host of rocky moments in the series by gutting through the bottom of the eighth, surviving a leadoff walk to Gary Sanchez and a two-out single by Gleyber Torres. "I know he'll be excited about it, and probably even more so because it's against the Yankees".
Many were blaming the fan for making that catch, but I really don't think Judge was going to grab that, and there certainly wasn't inference [we have a co-byline here so I'll point out this is Snyder talking]. Everybody's loose. Everybody come here every day ready to work.
The race for the division should be back-and-forth all year. "It's going to be a fun rest of the year".More news: Celtics erase 22-point deficit against 76ers
Austin said he wasn't anxious about Kelly going after him again.
That brought his average up to.354 and with 10 extra-base hits in 65 at-bats.
The Red Sox will try to get their offense going against Masahiro Tanaka, who is 2-0 with a 2.41 ERA in his last three starts.
Red Sox: RHP Tyler Thornburg, coming back from surgery last June 16 to correct thoracic outlet syndrome, made his fifth minor league rehab appearance. He gave up two runs and two hits while getting two outs for Double-A Portland.
This week's series was the first for the Yankees and Red Sox since April, and before it ended, Austin and Kelly would meet again.
Yankees: 1B Greg Bird (right ankle surgery on March 27) played five innings in his first rehab game for Class A Tampa and was 0 for 3 with two flyouts and an RBI grounder. Ramirez homered for the second straight game on Thursday, launching a solo shot off NY starter C.C. Sabathia in the fifth inning to put Boston up 4-0. OF Billy McKinney (left shoulder sprain on March 31) played seven innings in left field during his first rehab appearance for the Tarpons and went 0 for 1 with a groundout and two walks.
