Two security personnel injured in Shopian encounter

Security forces eliminated five militants of Hizb outfit including its top Hizb Commander and missing Kashmir university Assistant Professor in a fierce gun battle at Badigam area of south Kashmir's Shopian district.

The security forces including Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operations Group (SOG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had surrounded Badigam following a tip-off about the presence of militants.

The encounter broke out less than 24 hours after the security forces killed three militants during a gunbattle in the Chattabal area in the heart of the city yesterday.

The police official, who asked not to be identified as he is not authorized to speak to the media, said at least 10 of the wounded protesters were hit by bullets and four were in a critical condition.

"Encounter concluded at Badigam Zainpora Shopian, 5 bodies of terrorists recovered".

The other terrorists killed in the gunbattle are Tauseef Shiekh, Aadil Malik and Bilal alias Molvi, all residents of south Kashmir.

Bhat, a contractual assistant professor in the Sociology department of the university, went missing on Friday.

Bhat's family informed the university authorities about his disappearance on Saturday.

Police said they brought Bhat's family from Ganderbal to persuade him to surrender, but to no avail.

The police have confirmed only one death so far.

The police have called the family of the professor, Dr Mohammad Rafi Bhat from Chunduna, Ganderbal to persuade him to surrender, officials and family sources said.

The University of Kashmir has chose to suspend class work for two days as a "precautionary measure", in wake of the killing of the missing Professor in the Shopian gun fight on Sunday. Two security personnel were also injured in the encounter. The injured were shifted to 92 base military hospital in Badami Bagh Srinagar.
