Tens of thousands of people across Turkey mark May Day

In some countries, the particular day is celebrated on a separate day, but the significance remains the same.
May Day dates back centuries and originated as a pagan festival in the Roman era, although it later became known as Gaelic May Day - or Beltane - in Ireland and Scotland as a halfway date between the spring equinox and summer solstice.
In the USA, on May 4, 1886, a rally was ongoing in Chicago in support of workers who were striking for an eight hour work day and also protesting the killings of a number of workers by the police.

To honour the working class, May 1 is celebrated as International Labour Day, also known as May Day. The day coincides with "Maharashtra Day" and "Gujarat Day' when the two states attained statehood after the erstwhile Bombay state was divided on the basis of languages spoken by the people". It was the Labour Kisan Party who had organised the May Day celebrations in Chennai (then Madras). More pro-immigrant rallies are planned this year in multiple cities.
