James Comey Is Going on a Media Blitz. RNC Has a Plan

The version of this story that Kelly has told other senior staffers clashes markedly with Comey's, the official noted, and does not include Kelly calling President Trump "dishonorable".

The White House also said Trump's decision was based on the recommendations of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who at Trump's request had written a memo about Comey that was critical of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

ABC calls the RNC's plan "aggressive" and CNN calls it "extensive", noting that the RNC is also setting up a war room to track Comey's media appearances and respond in real time.

Those assessments mostly came following his 11th-hour move to revive an investigation into Hillary Clinton's unsecured private email server just days before the 2016 presidential election.

According to Comey's account, which is set to appear in his highly-anticipated forthcoming memoir, Kelly was "emotional" over the manner in which Comey was let go. Bernie Sanders saying Comey "acted in an outrageous way" and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi concluding that 'maybe he's not in the right job'.

Comey, several concluded, orchestrated the leak in order to put pressure on the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to investigate the president. The talking points call Comey's credibility into question by focusing on what the RNC calls his "long history of misstatements and misconduct".

An interview with Mr Comey, in which he is thought to speak candidly about Mr Trump's behaviour and the Russian Federation investigation, will air on Sunday night in the US.

"How unusual is it for you to sit here and compare the president to a mob boss?".
