John Bailey Sexual Harassment: Academy President Under Investigation

Bailey is under investigation for sexual harassment, according to a Variety report released on March 16, 2018.

The investigation comes five months after The Academy kicked out Harvey Weinstein amid a wave of sexual harassment and assault allegations against him.

Variety reported on Friday that Academy President John Bailey is under investigation for sexual harassment.

The standards outlined how the academy will approach sexual misconduct allegations going forward.

Following that move, the 75-year-old Bailey wrote to members, "The Academy cannot, and will not, be an inquisitorial court but we can be part of a larger initiative to define standards of behavior, and to support the vulnerable women and men who may be at personal and career risk because of violations of ethical standards by their peers".

Bailey was elected as president of the prestigious organization, which is made up of 7,000-plus members of the film industry, in August 2017.

Bailey did not respond to a request for comment.

Some within the organization, however, have wrestled in recent months with the implications of requiring the academy to police its members' behaviour. It did mark a victory for below-the-line workers in the group, many of whom have been wary of growing attention to high-profile actors and directors.

He succeeded Cheryl Boone Isaacs in the position, the Academy's first black president.

In February, Bailey told the annual luncheon for Oscar nominees that the 90-year-old organisation was reinventing itself with programs committed to inclusion and diversity "in today's era of a greater awareness and responsibility in balancing gender, race, ethnicity and religion.". He is also known as a scholar of film history, and had a keen interest in how the crafts would be represented in the Academy's museum, which is now under construction. Should the academy choose to let Bailey go, Lois Burwell, a veteran makeup artist, will fill the role until the next election in July.
