Students, teachers organize walkout over memorial and gun reform

In a letter to parents dated March 9, Superintendent Steven B. Connolly said the school's auditorium will be open for a student presentation starting at 10 a.m.

Women's March Youth EMPOWER is calling for students, teachers and administrators to take part in a #NationalSchoolWalkout for 17 minutes at 10 a.m. Wednesday, the one-month anniversary of the deadly shooting.

Sokul said students will be allowed outside the school if they choose, either to the sidewalk or the bus port.

Basically, the punishment students receive can't be any worse than what they would have otherwise received for skipping class on any other day.

"The students are concerned, and they're trying to bring attention to something that's important to them", St. Joseph High School Principal Greg Blomgren said.

On-campus metal detectors are one security measure Bayliss said may improve safety. "It's going to be more of a rally than a walkout".

Portsmouth High School is offering three options to students: a student council-led program in the gymnasium, a commemoration at the track and an op-out for students who don't want to participate in either activity. Molloy said she sold nearly 100 orange T-shirts with the message "Enough is Enough - National School Walkout March 14, 2018". According to Action Network, at least 16 schools in the Long Beach area, including Bellflower, Paramount and Cerritos, will participate Wednesday in some way, including most of the LBUSD's high schools.

The students' feedback comes two days before a nationwide, 17-minute school walkout.

Students with West Broward High School's Student Government Association are trading a walkout on Wednesday for a peaceful assembly.

While many students are communicating with teachers and principals about their plans, some have been frustrated with what they see as adults' attempts to control their protest.

Schools have threatened to slap students with unexcused absences, docked grades or suspensions if they choose to join the walkout.

Administrators at both schools said they are providing support to the students so the walkout can be done in a safe and orderly way. Numerous students and faculty will raise posters and signs that express a desire for safer communities, schools and workplaces.

"I would hope that people can realize that it's not necessarily a partisan issue", said Claire Jacobs, a 17-year-old senior at Huntington Beach High School.

This isn't Branson's first school protest since the Stoneman Douglas shooting. "It affects all of us".

The page also shows a walkout planned at Manatee High School, along with a moment of silence in honor of the victims. Plans are set for Wednesday.
