Richard Sherman's NFL Career By the Numbers

"I admit it's kinda weird having to cheer for you now", wrote one, Candle STAC Park.

Once the offer was on the table, Sherman called the Seahawks, who had released him just a day before, to ask if they could match the offer.

Per reports, Sherman, who was released last week by Seattle, narrowed his list of suitors over the weekend to the 49ers, the Seahawks, the Raiders and the Lions. He was at the NFLPA meetings in Las Vegas when the Seahawks gave him the news and he heard from 49ers general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan nearly as soon as the transaction hit the waiver wire. He also could increase the yearly compensation to $13.05 million by playing 90 percent of snaps, making the All-Pro team and being named to the Pro Bowl. If Sherman returns to form, the 49ers will have locked up a top cornerback for a well-under-the-market rate.

"I don't think any agent in the business could have done a better job of negotiating this contract", he said. But I can just tell you from the response we got from Richard and from other people around the league, it's a game-changer for us and so we're going to make good upon that and we're going to use it to our advantage, but we're going to make sure that we're just not doing splashy names.

Sherman fills the 49ers void opposite Ahkello Witherspoon and adds veteran leadership to San Francisco's young defense. "I think he is a heck of a player". It gives me the ability to control my destiny. That leaves 14 other games, however, for him to make a deeper impact for a 49ers franchise he's tormented as their hated rival since 2011. If he's named an All-Pro, which is slightly more hard then getting voted to the Pro Bowl, then Sherman will earn another $2 million. In my former contract, no matter what I did this year, nothing would be guaranteed to me next year. It's an incentive-laden deal that provides $3 million signing bonus, but another $2 million if he's medically cleared by training camp as well as a $2 million base salary for 2018. I couldn't feel secure in my contract. Afterward, Sherman and Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson sit at a table provided them on the 49ers logo at midfield and chow on some turkey for the postgame television show.

On Saturday, Sherman met with more of the 49ers brass, including Lynch and Marathe.

The tolling rule applies to players who, in the final season of their contract, remain on PUP as of their team's sixth regular-season game.

What you might normally see for a player like Sherman is a "prove-it contract" - one season at somewhat of a bargain price. Sherman called Oakland GM Reggie McKenzie, who said he wasn't going to have the cap money to compete for him. That scheme is similar to the one Seattle has run for many years and though the Seahawks have become a bit more diverse defensively in recent years, it's still the foundation of what they've done.
