International Solar Alliance signs deal on solar energy with France

India on Sunday announced one of the world's largest investment plans in solar energy at the Founding Conference of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

Last week, a former White House adviser on global energy and environment issues said the White House has been considering a plan to rejoin the agreement. He said regulatory aspects and standards should be developed to find solutions fast.

Solar power tariffs in India have fallen by almost 80% since 2010, hitting a record low of Rs 2.44 (about US$ 0.03) a unit in May 2017.

Macron said the summit to revolutionize the use of the clean energy by generating over 1,000 GW of solar power by 2030 was an outcome of the Paris accord even as "some left the floor" but others made a decision to act and keep acting.

Stating that existing guarantees need to be reviewed, he said, "We need appropriate guarantee tools". Macron called on the leaders from the ISA member countries to use the opportunity of the summit make concrete announcements that would pave the way for rapid deployment of solar energy.

Of these, 100 GW is to come from solar and 60 GW from wind.

He said that the "Solar Study Lamp Scheme" is providing power to around 7 million school-going children.

Macron lauded India's solar commitments that has 20 GW installed solar capacity - one of the.

At present, India does not have enough solar power capacity.

China is targeting over 360 GW of renewable capacity generation during the period.

It said that as part of a broader bilateral visit after the conference, the Governor-General will meet with business leaders in New Delhi and Chennai, address educational institutions with Australian links, view an Australian-funded aid project in Nizamuddin Basti, officially open an ANZAC (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) centenary exhibition, and visit an Indian Coast Guard vessel which is playing a role in enhancing regional security.

In the last few years, cheaper supply of panels and modules helped India bring down per unit solar tariffs to the level where the technology could compete with fossil fuel-generated electricity.

ISA aims at tapping solar energy in sunshine-rich countries that lie partially or fully between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.

Currently, there are 121 member countries, out of which 61 have joined the alliance and 32 have ratified the ISA Framework Agreement. He said, "Vedas consider the Sun as the soul of the world, it has been considered as a life nurturer". "We have to look at this ancient balanced and all-encompassing philosophy when when we today look for ways to deal with the challenge of climate change", he said.

"The International Solar Alliance and the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the Green climate fund, and the New Development Bank signed joint financial partnership declarations", an official statement from the Ministry of Finance said.

Heads and representatives of 58 nations are attending the founding conference.

French President Emmanuel Macron took a jibe Sunday at President Donald Trump for withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement.

"The International Solar Alliance has a well-articulated goal to facilitate the mobilisation of $1 trillion of capital to rapidly accelerate the adoption of solar energy all over the world", said Tripathy. "We need to increase the proportion of solar power in our energy mix".
