2 dead in helicopter crash in NYC's East River

A spokesman for the mayor's office, Eric Phillips, confirmed the fatalities on Twitter. "We were having dinner and we noticed a red helicopter going full speed towards the water".

The crash happened near the mayoral residence.

"The pilot freed himself - the other five did not", FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro told reporters. "By the time we got out here, we couldn't see it".

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman says the Eurocopter AS350 went down just after 7 p.m. Sunday in the waterway just north of Roosevelt Island and is "reportedly inverted in the water". Helicopters fly people around the city for business, traffic reports, medical reasons and tourism.

The other three were taken to hospital in critical condition.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear, but local media indicated the pilot had sent a distress signal that mentioned an engine problem shortly before the crash. The agency said it was investigating, and the National Transportation Safety Board would also probe the incident.
