Lionel Messi never fails to surprise us, says Barcelona coach

The 24-year-old pulled up when chasing back during the second half of his side's 6-1 LaLiga thrashing of Girona at Camp Nou.

Suarez then finished off a sweeping counter-attack involving Messi and Coutinho from five yards to make it 4-1 just before the interval.

But it was Messi who made it 2-1 after 29 minutes, when, running away from goal, he turned and shot low through the Girona defence.

Luis Suarez fired a hat-trick and Lionel Messi a brace as Barcelona ran riot in a 6-1 win against Girona to stay on course for their 25th La Liga title.

But, Messi worked his magic dancing around several defenders to get into a better position and then hammered home the goal.

Portu took advantage of hesitation from Barca centre-back Samuel Umtiti to round goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and slot into an empty net to put Girona ahead in La Liga's newest Catalan Derby.

Messi's slide-rule pass set up Suarez to rifle home an angled equaliser two minutes later and the Argentinian's free kick was brilliantly saved by Bono shortly afterwards.

Thanks to the five-time Ballon d'Or victor and his partner in crime Luis Suarez, Ernesto Valverde's side were back in it nearly as soon as they had gone behind, the Argentine setting up the Uruguayan for a well-worked leveller.

Fortunately for Barcelona, Luis Suarez equalized within minutes and the game was level again.

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde says that he is still being surprised by Lionel Messi as the Argentine continues to produce incredible performances. Suarez completed his treble 10 minutes later when he tapped in a cross by Ousmane Dembele.

After setting up the first of Suarez's goals, Messi danced around two defenders to give Barcelona the lead on the half-hour mark.

There was no let-up from Valverde's side and Rakitic and Dembele combined for Suarez to hit the outside of the post in pursuit of his hat-trick after 54 minutes.

After a slow start to the campaign, the Uruguayan forward has now scored 17 goals in his last 14 league matches.
