Tech basketball projected as a third seed

Despite Saturday night's overtime loss at home to Virginia Tech, the Virginia men's basketball team remains on pace to earn the top seed in the NCAA tournament.

UVA was projected as the top seed in the South region. Duke, Texas Tech and Ohio State joined Villanova in the East, to be played in Boston.

Texas Tech would be a third seed in the NCAA Tournament if it began today, according to a mock selection show put on Sunday by CBS. The actual tournament seeding will be held March 11. They were the East's No. 1 in 2014, the Midwest's No. 1 in 2016. "Purdue had two tough losses to quality teams, while Xavier picked up two good road wins to solidify the fourth No. 1 seed and ultimately leap Purdue on the seed list". Last season, 15 of the preliminary top 16 remained in that group for the bracket a month later.

With Duke, Clemson and North Carolina also included, the ACC comprised 25 percent of the top 16. That does not change much, if at all, because it's a big, top-tier win regardless of system. It will likely be ranked in the top three of the Associated Press poll on Monday. Had we won, yeah we would have been No. 1. Sure, it would have been great for everybody, but that's a small thing. 4 seeds in the South region.
