Arsenal legend Alan Smith reveals huge Mesut Ozil news from inside club

Ozil's contract expires at the end of the season and no signs have appeared to suggest he wants to prolong his stay at the Emirates, prompting interest from Jose Mourinho.

There are no such plans to allow Ozil to leave, however, despite the similar risk of losing the player on a free transfer. "So that's the good news".

And Wenger insists Wilshere and Ozil are staying.

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith has revealed, on Sky Sports, that Mesut Ozil is close to agreeing a new deal with the club.

Asked whether the 29-year-old would still be at the club in February, Wenger replied: "Yes, of course".

"We know what we want", said Wenger. "We want him to stay", the coach told reporters on Thursday. "That's what we're trying to do".

"My memories go for over 12 years", he said of the England global, who joined from Southampton at the age of 16 in 2006. I remember he arrived at the age of 16 and went to the World Cup straight away.

"Because we have big players that are at the end of their contract and that is the first time that it happens, that we have such influential players close to the end of their contracts and it has been more destabilising than ever".

While that could be because he does not wish to lose him and Alexis Sanchez in the same window, it could equally be an indication that there remains a possibility of tying him down. "He's always welcome here".
