Heyman | Astros acquire Gerrit Cole from Pirates

After weeks of negotiations and several false alarms, the Pirates on Saturday finally traded ace pitcher Gerrit Cole to the Houston Astros.

The Houston Astros have acquired Gerrit Cole in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, both teams announced on Saturday. He figures to open the season as one of the primary setup relievers behind new closer Fernando Rodney, who signed a one-year free-agent contract with the Twins in December. Throughout those years Cole posted a 59-42 record and a 3.5 ERA in 127 Major League Starts.

Cole was beleaguered by the home run ball in 2017, but there is every reason to believe that 2017 was an aberration. "Colin is an intelligent, hard-working player who made an adjustment to his swing and approach last season".

Moran, a 25-year-old third baseman, has appeared in just 16 major league games.

Martin, 21, was an eighth-round draft pick by the Astros in 2013.

The players the Pirates got in return for Cole is a bit underwhelming.

Cole is in his second year of arbitration eligibility, and players and management are set to swap salary figures Friday. However, the Astros opted to not place him on their 40-man roster, leaving him exposed in last month's Rule 5 Draft, and he was not selected by another organization.

The first overall pick of the 2011 draft, Cole has thrown at least 200 innings in two of the past three seasons, including 2015 when he was named an All-Star.

He went 12-12 over 33 starts and compiled a 4.26 ERA in 2017, a season after he missed serious time with elbow inflammation. The reigning World Series champions have pitching depth that includes Verlander, Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers, Charlie Morton, Brad Peacock, Collin McHugh and a slew of prospects. The most attractive thing about Feliz is his strikeouts per nine innings, which was 13.13 in 2017.
