Homily on the Solemnity of All Saints 2013

The Garden of the Holiness of God Today we celebrate with great joy the feast of All Saints. The prophet Ezekiel, contemplating the small river of life that flowed from the right side of the Sanctuary, speaks of the salvation and vivification that gives this torrent. How fruit trees that serve as food in each month, an infinite fecundity, and even how its leaves provide healing and remedy. The Apocalypse will return to this image to speak of the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, and will speak of it in similar terms. The stream of grace that flows from the open side, from the wounded heart of Jesus Christ on the Cross, recreates this new Garden of God, the saints are the fruits of that torrent of blood and water that saves, heals and vivifies. A torrent that is - indeed - the Grace of the Holy Spirit, Divine Creator Love, given away by the redemptive death of the beloved Son.

Let us visit a garden, a lavish garden in plant species and arranged harmoniously, almost musically , we are surprised by the variety of plants and flowers, and it is natural to think of the Creator's fantasy, which has transformed the earth into a wonderful garden. In every garden the fantasy and the creative force of God are linked together, and the patient, fatigued, hopeful human work that knows how to sow, wait for the fruit, tenderly prune the branches, design the beauty of the spaces, the combinations of colors, flowers , of leaves, discern the seasons so that the garden is truly a transcript of the Divine Beauty and infuse - like all Beauty - stillness and splendor.

The Cedars , evergreen trees that hold, strong, sturdy columns of the House of God "Apostles and prophets." Acacias : the wood with which the tabernacle of God was built: saints "theophores", bearers of God, their sanctification, their anointing: priestly holiness, they serve in the Sanctuary; are mediators: they carry the Word of the Law of Life, the branch of their blessed priestly fidelity, are in intimate contact with the Manna descended from Heaven: Ignatius of Antioch, Irenaeus, Carlos Borromeo, Juan de Avila, the Cure of Ars, San Juan Bosco, San José Cafasso, our Cura Brochero. The garden of God also possesses Fruit trees of the Doctors and mystics whose lives and writings allow us to taste the Sweetness of Divine Love, to taste and see the good which is the Lord, of exquisite taste, sapida scientia that perfects Charity, which is Word from the Charity of God : Basil, Ambrose, Agustín, León, Gregorio, Bernardo , Ricardo de San Víctor, Alberto Magno, Tomás, Juan de la Cruz, Hildegarda de Bingen, Teresa de Ávila, Francisco de Sales, John Henry Newman.

How much we need trees of fresh and protective shade: santos preachers who offer us - in the fatigue of life - the rest in the Word of God, to feed on it to regain the strength for the road: Domingo, Vicente, Jacinto; cypresses that point us to the high heaven, which unites heaven and earth: sanctity of monastic life. Benito, Odilón, Guillermo de Saint Thierry, Bruno, Sergio Radonezh, Seraph of Sarov. But in the garden there are also flowers: the roses -the love that does not have a why-Flowers because it blooms. Roses of the martyrs: a sign of extreme love, the surrender of Life, the perfume of Jesus Christ that blossoms in the midst of the thorns of the great tribulation: Stephen, Polycarp, Lorenzo, Sebastian ... martyrs of Christ the King.

But in the Garden we also find healing and medicinal herbs: Saints of Mercy, healing, friends of the afflicted people of God: Cosme and Damián, Pantaleón, Roque, Martín de Porres , Juan Macías, Camilo, Juan de Dios. But in the Garden we also find ourselves nonfunctional Saints ... plants and flowers just for God ... just for Your Gaze / b>: Let's think about the violet of the Alps, on the Edelwais ... They only bloom to brighten the eyes of the Creator.

We could not forget the violets : humble sanctity of widows, Augustine said, stained with the purple of penance and the precious purple of mercy: Monica, Rita, Isabella of Thuringia, Angela of Foligno. The Garden of God!

And do not forget the waste of the perfume of Nardo at the feet of Jesus: of the contemplative in the world and in the desert converted into a garden: Mary of Magdala, Martha and Mary of Bethany, Mary of Egypt, Álvaro de Córdoba, Luis de Granada. And some of the waste of the perfume of the spikenard have the saints artists: musicians like Rábano Mauro, Pablo deacon, again Hildegarda, Mectildis, Juan Sebastian Bach ... And the poetry: from Aurelio Prudencio, passing by the Pope Damasus, to Ambrosio and Gregorio with the Antifonale ... Roman the Singer, Jacopone da Todi and its sequences and the Eucharistic poetry of Thomas ... Perfume of spikenard: waste at the feet of Jesus. Fra Angelico and his painting, Santiago de Ulm with its stained glass ... Andrés Rubleiv and his icons.

On this day we feel that the attraction to heaven is revived in us, which impels us to hasten the pace of our earthly pilgrimage. We feel that the desire to join us forever to the family of the saints, from which we now have the grace to become part, is kindled in our hearts. As the singing of today's entry says: " Already crowned with fraternal love today they invite us" . The saints want us ... they want our company, our friendship, our society with them.

How beautiful and consoling is the communion of saints! It is a reality that infuses a different dimension to our whole life. We are never alone! We are part of a spiritual "company" in which a deep solidarity reigns: the good of each one is in the best interest of all, and vice versa, the common happiness radiates over each person. It is a mystery that, to some extent, we can already experience in this world, in the family, in friendship, especially in the spiritual community of the Church.

Today we give thanks to the Blessed Trinity especially for our Saints, those people who shared something of the walk of our life towards Jesus, those who taught us with their testimony the Way of Life, to those who showed us Jesus. They are with us, they see us in God. If you have been so solicitous with us in this walk, in this valley of smiles and tears, how much more solicitous will be for us now that the struggles, the sorrows, the tiredness, the weeping have ceased. Their small and fragile heart now beats with the same Love of God, if they loved us so much in life how much more and more they love us now that they live in the Love of the Heart of God, where there are no limits, no imperfections, no delays, no pettiness ... They love us with the Heart of God.
