Officer Killed, 1 Injured in Traffic Collision

The man, who "chose to be irresponsible" and is hospitalized in serious condition, will face a slew of felony charges upon his release from the hospital, Sanchez said.

The California Highway Patrol officer killed in the crash on 880 was identified as Andrew Camilleri, 33.

The accident was reported at 11:59 p.m. Sunday just north of Highway 92.

Additional details about the cause of the collision remain unknown.

The CHP declined to release the name of the driver who hit the patrol auto. The CHP says it appears the driver of the Cadillac was not only drunk, but under the influence of drugs and was coming home from a party.

Camilleri is survived by his wife, three children - a daughter and two sons, all between the ages of 2 and 12 years old - his parents, and two siblings, Brown said. All three victims suffered major injuries and were rushed by ambulances to local hospitals.

Traffic is congested because all vehicles, involving semi trucks, are being diverted to A Street.

CHP confirmed Monday morning that one of the officers had died of his injuries.

The Bakersfield Police Department sent thoughts and prayers to the California Highway Patrol via Facebook after the death of one of their officers on December 24th.

Flags at the Capitol will be flown at half-staff in the fallen officer's honor.

"Anne and I are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Officer Camilleri", Brown said.

Officer Hannah Walcott said the other officer, Trooper Jonathan Velasquez suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

"We join his family, companions and the whole California Highway Patrol in grieving his passing and in regarding his forfeit", the announcement read.
