The History Continues

THE HISTORY FOLLOWS A couple of years ago, at the end of June, through social networks, the concern was born to mobilize us from the impulse of discontent and the tiredness caused by the mercantilization and the excessive use of expressions (folklorized) of the "Mayan culture" by the officialdom. Especially during 2012 with the huge tourism campaign that revolved around the "Mayan prophecies about the end of the world" and in 2013 with the launch of the so-called "International Festival of Mayan Culture." In this last one, although the name and the concept of Mayan culture was used like central subject, the present Maya or its descendants were not included in the organization or the activities of the same. , to act, to express and to speak as a people and from their feeling without the mask of the officiality, since it has always been spoken of the Mayas by others who are not Mayans. Thus, the integration of the Collective Yóol Kaaj begins as an open, diverse and heterogeneous group but with very clear objectives: to make visible to the present Mayan people, to make their voices heard by their own means and to recover spaces that have been taken away through the organization of an independent festival.

The Cha'anil Kaaj (Feast of the People) is born. During the organization and the course of the festival itself, we realized that through this sharing people recovered spaces to express directly their customs, traditions and knowledge, as well as the freedom to speak their language, since in each and every one of the activities, whether in the capital or in the municipalities, was present.

These activities had the presence and participation of children, women, older adults and young people, all belonging to the Mayan culture; making the Cha'anil Kaaj a time and space for mutual learning.

From this experience, it was clear that the realization of an annual festival was not enough to achieve our goals and for this A year later, more hands joined this initiative and with renewed enthusiasm we continue to call and create spaces, maintaining our commitment to make the Mayan people and its diversity visible; to awaken and awaken the lethargy talent for centuries of exclusion and discrimination. The 2014 edition of Cha'anil Kaaj brought new academic, artistic, cultural and community activities such as the 2000 years of Maya Literature, the cultural caravan, cultural events, workshops, conferences, concerts, exhibitions and projects.

p> In 2015, the village festival is decentralized and becomes a hotbed of permanent events, privileging activities in community, allows anyone interested in carrying out activities, at any time of the year is organized, following our structure or not, only establishing contact with the group Yóol Kaaj.

Then we feel the need to make visible, acting, express and talk like people and their feelings without the mask of the officers, as they always talked about the Maya by others who are not Maya. > It begins the integration of Collective YOOL Kaaj as an open, diverse and heterogeneous group but very clear objectives: to visualize the current Mayan people make their voices heard by their own means and recover spaces that have been caught up by organizing an independent festival. During the organization and the course of the festival itself, we realized that through this sharing people recovering spaces to express directly their customs, traditions and knowledge, and

So they were held during the month of October 2013, over 100 activities between exhibitions, forums, seminars, lectures, panel tables, concerts, plays, artistic and cultural events, workshops and courses, book presentations, literature, video projections, filmed, and a cultural caravan with the participation of over 300 exhibitors, artists and lecturers.

These activities had the presence and participation of young audiences, women, elderly and young, all belonging to the culture; Kaaj Cha'anil making the time and space for mutual learning.

From this experience, it became clear that with the completion of an annual festival it was not enough to meet our objectives and for this reason we continued organizing activities .

In 2015, the village party is decentralized and becomes hotbed of permanent events, favoring activities in community, allowing anyone interested in activities, at any time of year is organized, following our structure, or not, just making contact with the YOOL collective Kaaj.
