India hammer Pakistan 4-0, enter Hockey Asia Cup 2017 final

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated the Indian hockey team for winning the Asia Cup 2017.

This is the third time that India has won the Asia Cup title and after a gap of 10 years. By virtue of this win, India not only topped the Super 4 stage with seven points, but also continued their domination over Pakistan.

Winning the Hero Asia Cup 2017 was South Korea's final chance to achieve World Cup qualification, but that dream was ended in heartbreakingly dramatic fashion.

Malaysia trailed India 0-2 in the first half. The second goal came from Lalit, who has been in great form throughout the tournament, was finally rewarded in the finals as he gave India a handsome 2-0 lead.

Harmanpreet hit the cross bar off India's second penalty corner as both teams failed to break the deadlock at half-time.

The Indian midfield have been held well by skipper Manpreet Singh and Chinglensana Singh, while veteran Sardar Singh has done exceedingly well as the central defender and the linkman between the midfield and the forwards.

The third quarter was a balanced one where Malaysia started to open up spaces in the Indian defence but all their efforts were well kept out. Shahril Saabah scored the lone goal for Malaysia in the final.

Before this, Malaysia's best achievement was third place in 2007 in Chennai, India. He added the victory was possible because of the team work they put in.

However, the match became much more interesting in the final quarter as Malaysia scored a goal with ten minutes left for the hooter. Malaysia, on the other hand, after playing out a 1-1 draw against South Korea made it to the final. "It was a close contest and I am happy how they played".
