Manchester City's Benjamin Mendy faces seven months out - Guardiola

Amsterdam police spokesman Frans Zuiderhoek said that officers attended to an accident in the city at around 11pm after "a taxi-cab hit a lamp-post".

"It is really frustrating for him, first as a person, but like what happened with Ilkay Gundogan a year ago, I am sad for him", manager Pep Guardiola said following his team's Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

Mendy seemed in strong spirit despite the injury and tweeted he was joining Loan FC.

"No way", Guardiola said about his chances of playing against Chelsea. "I think days off are for players to be happy".

City's defensive resilience will also be severely tested today in the absence of Mendy. So he chose to go there, it's okay for me.

"I don't know right now [if City will sign someone]".

But now, after hearing that he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, he's maintained his playful online persona and made fun of his strife.

Mendy suffered the injury during the first half of the Premier League leaders' 5-0 victory at home to bottom side Crystal Palace last Saturday.

After tests in Manchester at the start of the week, the 23-year-old travelled to Spain to see a specialist doctor and further examinations of the knee on Thursday confirmed the extent of the injury. Like Mendy, both were summer signings.

Midfielder Fabian Delph filled in at left-back during the 2-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday and Danilo can also play there.

The Spaniard was asked whether he would consider looking for a replacement left-back in January and replied: "We will see in January".
