U2 Preview New Single "The Blackout"

More information about the album, and the first official single, should arrive on the 6th of September.

The appropriately black-and-white video of the energetic " The Blackout" was recorded live, and isn't intended as the lead single off the album.

The video, directed by Richie Smyth, features grainy black-and-white footage of U2 performing the song in front of a small crowd in Amsterdam.

U2 had initially hoped to put out Songs of Experience earlier this year, but as guitarist The Edge said, as they were nearing completion: "the election [of Donald Trump happened] and suddenly the world changed".

It's three years since U2 released their last LP, Songs of Innocence - with long-time band pal Dave Fanning backing their Xmas release plan.

"Most of it was written in the early part of 2016, and now, as I think you'd agree, the world is a different place", The Edge told Rolling Stone earlier this year.

Bono says the new album will feature "proper, proper f-k-off songs".

Bono has said that U2 also needed time to cut down on the size of Songs Of Experience and wanted to return to the studio to fine-tune the music. The band began their extensive musical career in 1976, and "The Blackout" is from their upcoming 14th album, Songs of Experience. The band kicks off the second North American leg of its Joshua Tree Tour this Sunday in Detroit.
