Samsung Electronics Shapes Life's New Normal at IFA 2017

Offline Spotify syncing is available in both the Gear Sport and the Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro, the first time any smartwatch or tracker has had this feature (you can sync music to Android Wear smartwatches, but only through Google Play Music).

Samsung Electronics Co. on Thursday showcased three new wearable products ahead of the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) which kicks off this week, along with other TVs and home appliances.

The new products are arriving just days after Fitbit announced a new smartwatch and wireless headphones, and just several weeks before Apple is expected to release a new Apple Watch.

So far, Samsung hasn't made a decision to announced the Gear Sport price, but at least we know it's bound to arrive later this fall, so potential customers shouldn't have to wait too long before they can order one. Samsung gave it a round display and a slightly squared-off bezel, creating a rugged, Casio G-Shock kind of vibe. The Samsung Gear Sport smartwatch and the Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro fitness band.

As for the Samsung Gear Sport, that has a circular 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display, running at 360 x 360 resolution and with its own Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Big has worked for Samsung in the smartphone space, but the human body is less forgiving than trousers pockets, and the company ultimately did itself something of a disservice by creating the watch equivalent of the Galaxy Note.

What to expect from the 2017 IFA technology show

The most exciting partnership, though, is with Speedo.

Away from fitness, these buds are also Bixby-friendly so you can tap and hold one earbud to use your voice to control your music. What that means is swimmers will be able to easily track and incorporate swim achievements into personal fitness goals. It is powered by 1GHz Dual-Core processor with 768 MB RAM.

The Gear Fit2 Pro is also water resistant down to 50m.

The Samsung Gear Sport will work with Samsung Galaxy phones running Android 4.3 or later, other Android handsets with Android 4.4 or later and even on the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, SE and 5 using iOS 9.0 or later. I'm still highly dubious about any device that claims to accurately measure calories, and when I challenged Samsung to specify how accurate it thinks its wearables are, the company said it had nothing available to publish.

The easiest way to think of the Gear Sport is as the Gear S3 with a sporty twist, as indeed the name suggests.

Next up is the Gear Fit2 Pro, a GPS-packing fitness band. It'll get you four hours of talk time. The new Gear devices assist with a range of activities - from robust fitness tracking to nutrition and sleep monitoring, as well as motivational coaching as a lifestyle companion. They help you continuously monitor your heart activity - whether it's enjoying a stress-free nap or an invigorating cycling class. ● Premium Partnerships: Daily activity can be supplemented with updated Under Armour and Spotify partnerships.
