Sick Lorde stages silent dance performance at MTV Video Music Awards

But no one expected this.

MTV, continuing on from the MTV Movie and TV Awards earlier in the year, has abolished gender-specific categories with male and female artists competing against each other.

Her routine included foot stomps, collapsing on the ground, slow motion boxing moves, being carried in the air by back-up dancers dressed in black, and shoulder shrugs. Instead, in order to honor her commitment to the awards show, she apparently made a decision to perform the interpretative dance.

She may have been unable to sing for her performance due to a cold, but Lorde looked incredible in a strapless lavendar feather embellished gown from Filipino fashion designer Monique Lhuillier.

The Framlingham singer beat Kendrick Lamar to win "artist of the year" at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.

The ceremony also saw the mother of Heather Heyer, killed protesting a far-right rally in Charlottesville, launch a charity to promote her legacy.

Later, the sick singer took the stage for a performance of her new single "Homemade Dynamite".

"You can't tell in these pictures but I have the flu so bad I needed an IV", Lorde wrote on Twitter Saturday, after showing fans her "moon princess" look.

She said she'd "been rehearsing for the VMAs and my knees are covered in bruises" but didn't mention the fact she was ill.
