Utkal Express derailment: Derailment leading cause of train accidents in last decade

Twelve coaches of the Puri-Haridwar Kalinga Utkal Express derailed near Muzzafarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh on Saturday evening, injuring several people. "Medical vans sent to the site", Prabhu tweeted.

9 PAC Companies issued orders to immediately reach Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar to extend help in Relief and Rescue operations, reported ANI. The number of deaths from train derailments was 511 in the same period.

Indian Railways also released emergency helpline numbers for detailed information.

Meanwhile, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted, "I am personally monitoring the situation". In view of any terror module behind the derailment a team of ATS of state police has rushed to the accident spot.

-Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced ex gratia of Rs 5 lakhs to the next kin of any Odia passengers killed in the incident.

The busy Northern Railway route will be affected due to the derailment.

The Railway Ministry was also in close touch with the Uttar Pradesh government to coordinate rescue and relief operations.

Prabhu announced ex-gratia of Rs 3.5 lakh for those who lost their lives, Rs 50,000 for seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for people with minor injuries in the unfortunate accident. As of now, it's not clear how the accident happened.

Chief Minister Adityanath described the incident as sad and said his government would ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.

He has further said that strict action will be taken against any lapse.

PM Narendra Modi also expressed his sadness over the train accident and directed officials to speed up the rescue operation.

He added, "Have instructed Chairman Rly Board, Member Traffic to oversee rescue and relief operations".
