Eagles tade WR Jordan Matthews for CB Ronald Darby

This move comes on the heels of Buffalo trading Sammy Watkins to the Los Angeles Rams for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a second-round pick next year. As a result, it's clear to see that Matthews will be expected to assume No. 1 receiver duties upon his arrival. In a separate deal, the Buffalo Bills traded away their best cornerback for the Eagles' Jordan Matthews.

Sammy Watkins' yards per reception rate over the last 3 seasons is the 4th-best in the National Football League (min. 100 catches over that stretch). The Eagles upgraded the receiver position enough this offseason by signing Torrey Smith and Alshon Jeffery, as well as drafting promising rookie Mack Hollins, to feel comfortable making this move. Darby, who is 5-11, 195, is just 23-years-old and he has made 29 career starts already. With that number nearly certainly rising in 2017, you can expect a bump in pass attempts, which wasn't hard to do to begin with, seeing as the Bills have ranked in the bottom-two for pass attempts in each of the last two years.

Matthews had been the team's starting slot receiver heading into the 2017 season and caught three of Carson Wentz's four completions in the preseason opener in Green Bay on Thursday night. Last season, Watkins played in just eight games and totaled 430 yards and two scores on 28 catches. "It's hard to pull the trigger on a trade like that when you're giving up that kind of player and person". Darby was considered their top cornerback on the depth chart. And keep in mind that would be a 30-50 pass increase over last season.

Speculation has mounted during training camp about Jordan Matthews's future and role with the team as Nelson Agholor has been a standout throughout camp. "(Matthews) you'll always be my boy both on & off the field.

Not coincidentally, Jim Schwartz was the defensive coordinator in Buffalo for Darby's rookie season. However good he is as a player, he's a better person.

In Buffalo, Jordan will be reunited with running back LeSean McCoy, who was his Eagles teammate in 2014 before being traded to the Bills.

"It hurts when people you care about leave", Roseman said.
