Michigan Medicine makes big jump in US News national hospital rankings

The University of Maryland Medical Center was ranked the state's second-best hospital.

As many patients in the Commonwealth struggle with some of the most complex health issues, these recognitions cement UK HealthCare's role as the major health care system best equipped to deal with our state's unique health needs, said Dr. Michael Karpf, University of Kentucky executive vice president for health affairs.

This year's U.S. News & World Report rankings cover almost every hospital in every community nationwide.

Cleveland Clinic finished at the second spot in this year's rankings, with Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore ranked third. Using somewhat different data and weightings, a five-star ranking system introduced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services past year assigned three stars to KU Hospital, four to Saint Luke's and five stars, its top rating, to Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

As Colorado's only adult academic medical center, University of Colorado Hospital provides clinical trials and innovative treatments through a strong partnership with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. While more than 1,200 were rated high performing in at least one procedure or condition, only 48 were high performing in all nine procedures and conditions. For the first time in 24 years, Brigham and Women's Hospital wasn't included.

Baystate Medical Center was ranked the third best hospital in MA, rated high performing in nine adult procedures and conditions. Hospitals are assessed in 16 specialties for the rankings.

The U.'s Ears, Nose & Throat Clinic achieved the highest ranking of any specialty in the state, coming in at No. 18 after being unranked a year ago.

"Academic medical centers tend to handle larger numbers of complex patients, and our specialty rankings are created to identify hospitals that provide the best care for complex patients", said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News.

But health policy experts have said the government star ratings are unfair to teaching hospitals like KU, which often treat sicker patients.

The Mount Sinai Hospital received Top 20 rankings in the following specialties: Cardiology/Heart Surgery (No. 9), Diabetes/Endocrinology (No. 19), Gastroenterology/GI Surgery (No. 8), Geriatrics (No. 3), Gynecology (No. 23), which went from a "high performing" specialty to its current rank, Nephrology (No. 10), and Neurology/Neurosurgery (No. 16). "We're really pleased that we can have a major presence in this city", he said. These results place UH in the top 1 percent of the nation's 4,500 hospitals eligible for ranking this year.

Updated for 2017-18, U.S. News methodologies include risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety, quality of nursing care and other care-related indicators.

Michigan Medicine was followed in the state rankings by Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, which earned rankings in 9 adult specialty categories.
