You can buy diaper tax-free this weekend

"The start of a new school year is always an exciting time for Florida students, and the back-to-school sales tax holiday makes it easier for parents and students to prepare for a successful year".

There's no better reminder of that than Virginia's sales tax holiday weekend, which begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and continues through 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

The sales-tax holiday will provide tax breaks on clothing and shoes up to $60 per item.

In addition to back-to-school supplies, the sales tax exemptions also apply for hurricane preparedness purchases and for energy-efficient appliances and water-saving items. If a rain check issued during the sales tax holiday is redeemed after the sales tax holiday, the purchase is not tax exempt.

Tania Burnett, Ashtabula County Children Services executive director, said families with multiple children going back to school can face a financial burden.

For instance, in Houston, the sales tax rate will be 3.375 percent - which is absent the state sales tax. School supplies costing $15 or less will also be tax-free and technology items like computers and accessories costing $750 will be tax-free as well.

The tax free holiday is from August 4 to August 6. School supplies include textbooks, notebooks, paper, pens, pencils, crayons, art supplies, rulers, book bags, backpacks, handheld calculators, chalk, maps and globes.

A House bill analysis estimated the holiday period will reduce state revenue by $26.6 million and local government revenue by $6.8 million. For example, if a customer purchases a pair of trousers that costs $110, then sales tax is due on the entire $110.

Gene Perry with Oklahoma Policy Institute said a common belief is sales tax holidays mean an overall economic boost from people buying more.
