Porte crashes spectacularly out of Tour de France

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas has been forced to abandon the Tour de France after crashing during a high-speed descent during stage nine on Sunday.

However, Porte's BMC sporting director Fabio Baldato insisted the team had come prepared, particularly for the Mont du Chat climb and descent.

"He had a lot of pain but we need to wait for the doctors", he said.

The 31-year-old spent four days in the yellow jersey at the start of the Tour, following his brilliant win in the opening time trial in Dusseldorf.

The other general classification contenders followed the Italian, but seemingly in order to remonstrate with him and tell him to wait.

"I managed to catch the group in front of me after I crashed the second time - I was flying down the mountain", he said with a smile. From what I understand it looked like Richie (Porte) had said to my other rivals, "Listen guys, this is not the moment to attack when the leader of the race has got a mechanical".

"I really hope Richie is OK, I saw a bit of that crash". I just don't know what Majka was doing.

He also went down in the second, fourth and eighth stages.

Regardless, the fall obviously ended his race, and he was taken to the hospital to get checked out.

With four bonus seconds on the line for third place, Froome extended his lead over Aru to 18 seconds.

Uran took victory in a photo finish ahead of Warren Barguil, one final twist of drama on a day that will live long in Tour history.

Martin lost more than a minute, as did Movistar's Nairo Quintana, three times a runner-up in the race, while former victor Alberto Contador of Trek Segafredo seems to be out of contention after losing over four minutes.

"Where I crashed, I don't think it was [too dangerous]".
