Samsung bringing $380 million plant, 954 jobs to Newberry County

It is expected to begin operation in early 2018.

"With this investment, Samsung is reaffirming its commitment to expanding its United States operations and deepening our connection to the American consumers, engineers and innovators who are driving global trends in consumer electronics".

According to the press release, over the past 18 months, Samsung has acquired Connecticut-based company HARMAN International for $8 billion, committed $1.2 billion to "U.S. -based Internet of Things R&D and investments", $1 billion to "expanding the Samsung Austin Semiconductor facility, established in 1996", and acquired Dacor, "adding the luxury home appliance company's Los Angeles headquarters and 240 employees to Samsung's operations".

Hyundai Motor America (HMA) held a 20th anniversary event at its Washington office for Hope on Wheels, a program supporting treatment for pediatric cancer patients.

The company said the plant will create positions during the next three years for craftsmen, operators, engineers, and other technical and non-technical positions.

On its website, the South Korean company said the investment decision was driven by the high-skilled workforce in SC, the state's record in attracting and retaining other global businesses, "strong local government leadership" and strong highway and port facilities. Samsung says placing their engineers, R&D and manufacturing operations closer to US consumers will help them do an even better job of developing and delivering innovative products.

Samsung said ultimately facility in the southern USA state will be "serving as the U.S. hub for home appliance manufacturing across the business unit".

The chamber said that the investment will go into building factories, expanding production facilities, research and development on developing future technologies as well as mergers and acquisitions.

Samsung said Newberry was chosen for its abundance of skilled workers and good access to transportation.

"It's incredibly exciting that a company of the size and caliber of Samsung would choose our community for such a large and important manufacturing project", said Henry H. Livingston III, Newberry County Council chairman.

Once the facility begins full operations, it will create an estimated 950 new jobs, according to the company. "We have a long manufacturing history here in Newberry County, and this writes a whole new chapter".

The plant is located at 284 Mawsons Way in Newberry in the former Caterpillar facility.

The South Korean tech giant said the investment will be made in Newberry county, South Carolina, Yonhap news agency reported.

SK Group, a South Korean energy and telecom conglomerate, said it plans to strengthen business ties and expand investment in the USA shale gas business.

Samsung employs over 18,500 people across the USA, including 3,000 jobs in Silicon Valley and over 6,000 manufacturing and engineering job in Texas.
