Reports about the resistance to Trump meeting Putin suggests that some are wanting to organize a formal meeting of the United States and Russian delegations, but without the two presidents involved. Burns criticized Obama for not doing more as it became apparent during last year's election that Russian Federation was trying to interfere.
"In many ways its meddling in European elections over the past year has produced the exact opposite of what was intended", she said.
"It appears that they took the warning seriously", Mattis said, referring to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, saying it had not launched any new chemical attacks.
The US is "very poorly prepared" if the Russians interfere in the upcoming midterm elections, he added.
