Bruno Mars kicks off BET Awards

Mars, who will open the show at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, is nominated for five awards. In its caption she announced she was going to be performing alongside with Drake at the NBA Awards show that airs June 26, the day after the BET Awards.

But Minaj skipped the 2017 BET Awards this year, even though she was nominated for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, a title that she has won every year since 2010.

The hip-hop trio Migos won the night's first honor - the best group award. "You can make mistakes and come back".

The two rappers had a much-publicized feud this year (though one that apparently really dates back a decade), fought via a rap battle that Ma started with the explicitly Minaj-centric diss track "Shether". Minaj never officially responded to the song.

Chance gave a shout-out to BET chairman and CEO Debra Lee while Bruno Mars acknowledged executive Stephen Hill. The R&B band performed a medley of their songs "Mr Telephone Man", "Can You Stand The Rain" and "If It Isn't Love".

Since being released from prison in 2014, Remy Ma joined the cast of Love & Hip Hop and partnered with Fat Joe for the double platinum single "All The Way Up". The crowd was in awe, singing along and filming the performance with their phones.

Mars has been on an R&B adventure with his latest album, "24K Magic", which was inspired by '90s R&B. Mars also won best male R&B/pop artist and kicked off the show with a fun and funky performance of the song, "Perm". The Queens native says she became the "most awarded" female rapper in history after recently winning an ASCAP award for her feature on Yo Gotti's "Down in the DMs" remix.

The No Frauds rapper also noted her historical accomplishment of unseating Aretha Franklin to become the first female in the history of music with the highest entries in the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

And if you were feeling bad for the prodigious, staunchly light-spirited, and politically active Chance, fear not - the young rapper certainly got his share of praise.

Beyonce, who reportedly had her twins earlier this month though she hasn't commented on the topic, was the top nominee with seven.

"Chance is showing our young people that they matter", she said. The 24-year-old won best new artist and also was honored with a BET humanitarian award for his work to improve Chicago public schools. "Without saying her name Remy spat bars about rappers getting "*ss shots" and other augmentations to get ahead. Other nominees include Missy Elliott, Young Ma and Cardi B.
