Gunman acted alone in Alexandria shooting

GJELTEN: Agent Slater said it appears Hodgkinson's decision to shoot up a Republican baseball practice was more spontaneous than planned.

Additionally, Slater said, Hodgkinson did not appear to have had specific targets or "an agenda to actually follow through on these six individuals".

Law enforcement officials shared their findings Wednesday from their investigation into the shooting.

"He was struggling in all kinds of different ways, " FBI Assistant Director Tim Slater said.

His wife has said in interviews that he left their home in Belleville saying he was headed to Washington to work on tax policy.

The gunman turned out to be an unemployed home inspector with a deep animus toward President Donald Trump and other Republicans. Wednesday the Federal Bureau of Investigation said what they discovered in a storage shed that the shooter, James Hodgkinson, had rented before he put his plan into action. They did not detail the names. The night before the shooting, Hodgkinson visited locations with free WiFi to search on his computer directions from Alexandria to his home in Belleville and the "2017 Republican Convention".

Investigators also found a laptop, a cell phone and a digital camera in Hodgkinson's vehicle. Hodgkinson's posts did not include "threats or references to Members of Congress or the Congressional baseball game". He says investigators have been digging into Hodgkinson's background.

Slater said Hodgkinson acted alone and was known to have an "anger management problem".

The two officers returned fire, killing Hodgkinson. Hodgkinson's arrest in 1992 by Illinois State Police for suspicion of resisting and obstructing a peace officer also was dismissed. He'd told a family member he was traveling to Washington without providing any additional information, said Slater.

Hodgkinson's online political rants were mostly anti-Republican and officials said they were within his First Amendment rights.

"I told him they were Republicans". He visited the unit 43 times between April and June, including the morning of the shooting.

"The morning of the shooting", he continued, "he arrived at his storage unit at 6:23 AM and departed at 6:35 AM". Prior to his departure from IL, a neighbor reported Hodgkinson to police for firing a gun on his property, but police determined he had not committed a crime.

Hodgkinson, who had both a rifle and a handgun in his possession, is believed to have purchased the weapons after the presidential election.

In addition to his social media accounts, he wrote letters to his local newspaper that blamed Republicans for what he considered an agenda that helped the wealthy.

Scalise was shot multiple times and gravely injured. He has undergone several surgeries and remains hospitalized.

He was in serious condition, according to a Twitter message from his office that was posted on Saturday (June 17).

Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown lauded the heroic actions of officer Nicole Battaglia and two other officers who were the first to arrive at a field where GOP congressmen were practicing for the game.

The man who shot U.S. Majority Whip Steve Scalise and four others a week ago fired more than 60 shots - 50 of them from a modified, semi-automatic rifle - during the ambush attack and had more bullets on him before he was stopped by return fire from police.

In Belleville, Hodgkinson also had a record of arrests on various criminal charges dating back to 1988, according to St. Clair County, Ill., Circuit Court documents.
