Riley grew up in Muleshoe, Texas, (pop. 4,975) and was still just an under-the-radar offensive coordinator at Eastern Carolina in 2014.
Riley became the youngest head football coach in FBS after replacing Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, and he inherits a powerhouse program regarded as one of the nation's best.
Still, there will be an adjustment period since the Sooners had the same coach in place for 18 1/2 years.

Also, while he was at Oklahoma, Bob Stoops botched multiple cases involving violence against women involving players at the University of Oklahoma, and set an very bad example by doing so for the university and the sport as a whole.

Along the way, his teams won first with defense and then with offense, adapting to the changing flow of the Big 12.
Bob Stoops is out and Lincoln Riley is in at Oklahoma. He is married to Carol Stoops, a Mary Kay National Sales Director, and has three children.
"He's still going to be coaching the offense, calling plays, so it's a bigger role for him on the defensive side of things and more responsibility", quarterback Baker Mayfield said. In his first year there, the Oklahoma Sooners won seven games and advanced to their first bowl game since 1994.
"This has special meaning for us at Kansas State", Snyder said.
Oklahoma's Bob Stoops will easily go down as the greatest coach the Big 12 ever knew.
Before coming to the Oklahoma Sooners, Lincoln Riley was an assistant coach for Texas Tech and East Carolina.
