Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez will be staged at T-Mobile Arena

Golovkin, popularly known in boxing as Triple G, has campaigned for a fight against Alvarez for much of the past two years.

As secret talks continue for a possible boxing match between the unbeaten, pound-for-pound prizefighting king Mayweather and UFC champion Conor McGregor, Alvarez-Golovkin in Sin City is a done deal.

Mayweather, who retired in 2015, often fought in September, and his rivalry with De La Hoya is intense enough to take seriously a possible competing super-fight on the same night had De La Hoya opted to return Alvarez to AT&T Stadium a year after he drew 51,000 to the Dallas Cowboys' home. "We look forward to celebrating Mexican Independence Day Weekend in Las Vegas with our event partners and boxing fans worldwide". "I was contemplating it", De La Hoya said.

So that's how the fight between Canelo and GGG, two of the 10 best pound-for-pound fighters in the world according to The Ring magazine, landed at the same venue as Canelo's dismantling of Julio César Chávez Jr. last month.

De La Hoya also went with the T-Mobile arena after MGM Resorts International, which owns the T-Mobile Arena, the MGM Grand and several other casinos, made what Golden Boy president Eric Gomez told ESPN was "an incredible pitch and incredible offer".

For those who thought T-Mobile Arena was a foregone conclusion, De La Hoya makes it clear that a lot of money was thrown his way to host what could be the fight of the year.

Monday on ESPN's "SportsCenter," Golden Boy Promotions frontman Oscar de la Hoya announced that the hotly-anticipated middleweight showdown between Canelo and "GGG" will emanate from the T-Mobile Arena on September 16. "Gennady's reward, and the fans' reward, will be battling in the biggest and best matchup in the sport of boxing".

Texas, New York, Los Angeles and others were initially said to be in the running until the T-Mobile was picked for what should now be a 20,000 sell-out in the fall. "We are thrilled to be producing and distributing this power-house event from the bright lights of Las Vegas". De La Hoya said he fielded inquiries about the fight from Dubai and the United Kingdom, as well as locations in the United States.

Ticket sale information and prices are due to be announced in the near future.
