London police boost security at sports events

She said: "The public should be clear about what this means - a threat level of severe means an attack is highly likely".

The de-escalation in the country's threat level from its highest point suggests confidence that the operations conducted in the last week have stifled any imminent threats.

It had been set at "critical" in the aftermath of the bombing in Manchester.

The other eight men, aged between 18 and 38, were being questioned over their involvement in the attack on Monday that killed 22 people, the police said in a statement.

A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Police said: 'We are now carrying out a search at an address at a property in Moss Side in connection with the attack on the Manchester Arena on Monday.

Before arriving at the concert, which had attracted a young audience including many children, Abedi is believed to have put the final touches to his bomb in a city centre flat.

The decision to stop sharing police information with USA agencies was an extraordinary step as Britain sees the United States as its closest ally on security and intelligence.

Counter-terrorism police say they are making good progress on the fast-moving investigation and are gathering a detailed picture of Abedi, his associates and his finances. British officers do not usually carry guns, CNN reported.

But as campaigning resumed in Britain for a snap 8 June 8 election following a halt called after Monday's attack, the issue of security, which had not been widely discussed before the attack, was poised to feature highly as polls showed May's poll lead falling sharply.

What about the Libya connection?

Specialist counter-terrorist forensic teams were immediately dispatched to the scene of the blast and Abedi's identity was known to officers within two hours.

Amid the hunt for Abedi's possible accomplices in the United Kingdom, his father and one of his brother's, Hashim, were arrested in Tripoli, Libya Wednesday.

The bomber's brother was detained in Libya a day after the bombing by a militia nominally under the control of Libya's interior ministry. More than 20 people were killed in an explosion following a Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena late Monday.

Family and friends have paid moving tributes to those lost.

Grande, meanwhile, said that she would return to Manchester for a benefit concert to raise money for the victims and their families. The troops will gradually be withdrawn beginning on Monday, she said.

However, there is a darker side to life in the city in the wake of the bombing.
