Magic name Jeff Weltman president of basketball operations

Matt Lloyd is serving in the role on an interim basis after Rob Hennigan was sacked in April.

Weltman joined Ujiri in the Toronto front office in 2013 after spending five seasons as the assistant GM under general manager John Hammond in Milwaukee.

Weltman's first major assignment is to find a new GM. With the Raptors, he worked under team president Masai Ujiri, regarded as one of the premier executives in the National Basketball Association. With the growing demand on basketball operations, a new organizational structure and greater investment was needed. Faced with the daunting task of remaking the Orlando Magic, he wasted little time in adding a familiar face to help him. "We are very fortunate to have him as part of the Magic family".

It was a busy day for the Orlando Magic on Tuesday as they not only hired a new president of basketball operations, but they also hired a new general manager.

The Magic hoped to have a leader of the Basketball Operations department in place prior to the June 22nd NBA Draft. Matt Lloyd, an Orlando assistant GM, has been serving as interim GM and could remain with the organization.

Weltman and Hammond will work with head coach Frank Vogel, who is entering his second season with Orlando, to fix a roster that has many weaknesses.

The Deer had a record of 315-463 under Hammond.

During his final season with the Clippers (2000-01), L.A. improved its win total by 16 victories - the biggest turnaround in the league. They have been to the playoffs four times during his nine-year tenure and three times in the past five years. Antetokounmpo has turned into an NBA All-Star.

Hammond interviewed with Orlando for the president's job, but lost out to Weltman.
