Gonzalez played in 51 games at Arizona State and won the Lou Groza Award previous year as the nation's top kicker.
His agent, Andy Simms, confirmed the deal and McCourty told NFL Network he is going to sign a 2-year $6 million contract that included $2 million guaranteed.
McCourty, 29, was released by Tennessee after spending his entire 8-year career with the Titans. He was originally selected by the Titans in the sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft and amassed 517 tackles, 13 interceptions, 91 passes defensed, six forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and one sack.
The Cleveland Browns may very well be adding depth to their secondary. For what it's worth, the only Browns cornerback to rank better was Jamar Taylor (19th).More news: The Coca-Cola Company (KO) Closed at $43.85
McCourty may be equally valuable on and off the field for the Browns. "That meant a lot for me", McCourty said Wednesday during an interview with Cleveland Browns Daily. I know what his defenses consist of. Sanu talked positively about Jackson as both a person and coach, and McCourty filed it away.
"I wanted to go somewhere where I felt I could come in and be a piece of the puzzle, whether it's helping with veteran leadership or contributing in any way I can on the field", he said. "This was an easy decision for me". In those starts, McCourty totaled 69 tackles, 60 of which were solo stops. But, there's a reason why McCourty hasn't signed on to a team yet, and it's probably because he's not getting the type of "final big contract" he'd like to have after missing 14 games to injury over the past two years in Tennessee.
In other news, the Browns announced they signed seventh-round draft pick Zane Gonzalez.
