Russian Federation says Israeli strikes on Syria are unacceptable

Israel participates in the war in Syria in various forms, which include using weapons against Syrian army positions and directly supporting terrorist groups which fight against government troops, Assad told Venezuelan Telesur broadcaster.

A huge explosion shook Damascus in what state media said was an Israeli missile strike on a military installation near the Syrian capital's global airport.

'Naturally, I don't want to elaborate on this'.

A loud explosion hit close to the Damascus International Airport in Syria Thursday, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Later Thursday, Israel's military said its missile defense system hit something flying from Syria over Israel's northeastern Golan Heights. The weapons are believed to have been transported through the airport via commercial and cargo planes.

'The prime minister has said that whenever we receive intelligence that indicated an intention to transfer advanced weapons to Hezbollah, we will act'.

Israeli Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said the strike is in line with Israel's policy of targeting Hezbollah's arms deliveries in Syria, but stopped short of saying Israel was responsible for the strikes.

Russia's military said a day after the attack that Syria's air defences would be boosted. Israel did not deny or confirm any reports on the attack.

Al-Manar is affiliated with Hezbollah, an ally of the Syrian government.

The source said numerous arms are destined for an array of Iran-backed militias, led by Hezbollah, which have thousands of fighters engaged in some of the toughest fronts against Syrian rebels.

"The Syrian army and its allies will work to thwart the new Israeli plot on the occupied Golan border and will continue to destroy the enemy's collaborators", a Syrian military source said to Lebanese news site el-Nashra, claiming the missiles had destroyed fuel tanks.

Israel has officially remained silent on the strike as it has done in previous alleged strikes in Syria.
