8 shot during San Diego pool party; suspect dead

A man was shot dead by police after he opened fire in a pool area of an apartment complex in University City on Sunday evening, reports CBS San Diego affiliate KFMB-TV.

Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said Selis, 49, appeared to be shooting black people in the pool area around 6 p.m. EDT Sunday, according to 911 dispatchers. He said the gunman started shooting at the officers, but they shot back at him.

He said he and his wife saw "three people laying on the ground shot" and one wounded victim trying to crawl to another to give assistance. In addition, one African-American man broke his arm as he was fleeing the chaotic scene'.

Shahrayar Jeff told the San Diego Union-Tribune that his 8-year-old granddaughter was at the pool and saw the gunman drinking beer "and shooting".

It was earlier reported that eight persons were shot but the figure was later revised to seven.

Arriving officers located the suspect in the pool area.

"Somebody opened fire", witness Lauren Seed, who was clearly shaken told NBC 7. Police said they did not know if race was a factor in the attack.

"Three officers moved in and took out the suspect", the witness said.

Police said the shooting took place during a party in the pool area of the complex where a large group of people were gathered. "We were tapping on windows to tell people that there was an active shooter and they should get away from the street".

Police said they do not have any information on the shooter and his motive at this stage.

9-1-1 dispatchers say that the shooter seemed to be targeting people of colour at the party.
