Local lawmakers to discuss proposed bill for Equal Pay Day

Created in 1996 by the National Committee on Pay Equity, Equal Pay Day each year is held on the day that marks how far into the next year the average woman would need to work to earn the same as the average man made in the entire previous year. African American women on average earn only 63 cents and Latina women on average earn only 54 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men.

She says numerous states that are projected to close the wage gap sooner have family-friendly laws that help propel women forward on the books, including paid sick leave and tax credits for child care and education.

White, non-Hispanic women are paid 75 cents for every $1 paid to white, non-Hispanic men.

April 4 is "Equal Pay Day" and the organizations are hoping to draw attention to the inequities in compensation and give a boost to the Paycheck Fairness Act, which members of Congress were expected to reintroduce Tuesday.

Overall, the Washington think tank said, unionized women earned 94 percent of what unionized white men earned, compared to nonunionized women, who earned 78 percent of what nonunionized men did. It hurts our families, our businesses, and our communities. The Paycheck Fairness Act would eliminate "loopholes in the Equal Pay Act, helping to break harmful patterns of pay discrimination and strengthening workplace protections for women".

Of course, in addition to a wage gap within occupations, there is also a wage gap "between occupations".

Senate Bill 221 was introduced during the most recent legislative session, that bill looked to study the difference in pay between state workers, even though employee pay information is already public record. The U.S. Women's National Hockey team fought for salaries and bonuses equal to their male counterparts and won. Louisiana ladies are paid just 68 cents on the dollar for what men are paid.

Elected leaders weighed in on the disparity found between men's and women's salaries as people marked Equal Pay Day Tuesday. Include salary negotiation training for both women and men as one of the requirements for undergraduate college degree completion.

OH ranks No. 10 among states with the largest wage gap, after Wyoming, Louisiana, West Virginia, Utah, and North Dakota.

Only Wyoming is worse than Louisiana for women.

This matters for all women but, with the aging USA population, the gender wage gap especially hurts older women. The idea is to link the concept of the pay gap, which can seem murky, to real, everyday purchases, at least just for one day.
