Whiteside's buzzer-beater tip give Heats victory over Pistons

The Detroit Pistons (34-40) are just 1 1/2 game behind No. 8 Miami in the Eastern Conference Standings.

Heat star center Hassan Whiteside (17 points and nine rebounds) scored the game-winning basket at the buzzer when he tipped in point guard Goran Dragic's missed shot attempt with his left hand, which caused the whole Miami squad to erupt in celebration.

However, Goran Dragic led the Heat with 28 points.

His struggles have branched out to the rest of the team, and following Detroit's latest embarrassing loss to the New York Knicks, Pistons coach-President Stan Van Gundy admitted that the team is considering shutting him down the rest of the season.

Six players are averaging at least 10.8 points per game for Detroit, they are: Tobias Harris (16.2), Reggie Jackson (14.5), Andre Drummon (14.3), Morris (14.1), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (14.0) and Jon Leuer (10.8).

"That one hurts", Smith said. Even earlier this month, Jackson posted a 14-point fourth quarter as the Pistons came back to beat the Bulls behind his 26 points and, four days later, he put up 12 points and four assists in the fourth quarter of a big win over Cleveland in which he scored 21. The Pistons began the night in 10th place, needing to leapfrog both Chicago and Miami with the Bulls a game ahead and holding the tiebreaker over the Pistons and Miami 1½ games up with Wednesday's result giving the tiebreaker edge to the victor.

Washington has a fairly strong chart-play in their favor tonight against the spread as they have covered two straight games after not covering their previous 6 games. Dragic hit a free throw after Detroit committed a sideline violation, then made a jumper to cut the deficit to one with 24 seconds left.

After a McGruder turnover, Smith drained a jumper for a 96-92 Detroit advantage. They want to play well for each other.

After pressuring the Pistons, James Johnson and Stanley Johnson were called for a jump-ball. It was Miami's final trip to The Palace of Auburn Hills. "It's strictly been my call all the way", Van Gundy said. Prior to the game, the coach said it was strictly his decision and that Jackson wanted to play.

Right after the ball goes through the hoop, James Johnson lifts 7-foot Whiteside in the air while the rest of his teammates surround him in a huge hug. KCP was aggressive all night on the offensive end as is often the case in a Reggie Jackson-less lineup.

They went scoreless for the first 7:08 of the second half in a 109-95 loss to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.

Hassan Whiteside made the best tip-in of his National Basketball Association career on Tuesday night at the buzzer to beat the Pistons at The Palace, 97-96.

"He really cares about the guys in the locker room and that's one of the most powerful things I've seen as a coach", Spoelstra said.
