Breast Implants Could Give You Rare Cancer

Last year, the global health body concluded that anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) - a rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma - could develop after getting breast implants. In most cases, the disease is treatable, The New York Times reported.
"All of the information to date suggests that women with breast implants have a very low but increased risk of developing ALCL compared to women who do not have breast implants", said the FDA release.
In an update on Tuesday, the agency said it had received 359 reports of the cancer in women with breast implants, but cautioned that such reports are often missing key details, unconfirmed or duplicated.
The disease is most likely to occur with textured implants that have a pebbly surface rather than a smooth surface, the FDA said.
The FDA notes that it is unclear how many cases of implant-related cancer exist due to a lack of data and reporting problems. "Of these, 203 were reported to be textured implants and 28 reported to be smooth implants." the statement said. Breast implants approved in the USA can be filled with either saline or silicone gel and come in different sizes and shapes and have either smooth or textured shells. Less than 10 patients are diagnosed with breast implant-associated ALCL annually. Usually, cases are reported as soon as some unusual symptoms occur, like pain, lumps, swelling and fluid buildup.More news: 'Very impressed': Elon Musk speaks to SA premier Jay Weatherill
One of their common characteristics is the outer silicone shell, present in either case, but they differ in material and consistency, with silicone implants offering a more natural look and feel.
Its recommendation to healthcare providers is to continue to proved patients with breast implants with "routine care and support". Some studies have found markers of chronic inflammation in the scar tissue around breast implants, suggesting that an immune response to the implants might trigger ALCL, the paper said.

If you have breast implants, there is no need to change your routine medical care and follow-up.
Breast enhancements are the second most-popular form of plastic surgery in the U.S., with more than 300,000 procedures performed a year. "Of these, 186 reported implants filled with silicone gel and 126 reported implants filled with saline", the administration continued. In the United States, about one in 500,000 women is diagnosed with ALCL each year, although the incidence of this cancer specifically among USA women with breast implants is not known, according to the FDA.
