Germany Attack: Three Injured As Car Ploughs Into Pedestrian Area In Heidelberg

Police were tipped off by eyewitnesses and shot the driver, who had escaped on foot, allegedly holding a knife, after a short manhunt. He was seriously injured and brought to a nearby hospital.

A man who drove into three pedestrians in Heidelberg has been shot by the police. According to local newspaper "Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung", the man is now not fit to be questioned.

The motives for the attack remained unknown.

Schaetzle said said a terrorist background is not suspected and the man appears to have acted alone. The city is primarily known as a university town - about a quarter of its 150,000 residents are students.

Police spokesperson Anne Baas said the incident took place outside a bakery on Saturday afternoon, and that one of the three was seriously injured.
