Verizon gets serious about 5G: Testing imminent in 11 USA locations

Verizon will begin pilot testing 5G "pre-commercial services" in cities, including Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Miami, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

Verizon is planning that its 5G tests will include "several hundred cell sites that cover several thousand customer locations", and the tests will be handled as part of its 5G Technology Forum (5GTF).

Verizon's 5GTF partners include Apple, Cisco, Ericsson, Intel, LG, Nokia, Samsung and Qualcomm.

The last time we visited Verizon Wireless' efforts to bring 5G connectivity to Americans, the company had completed its 5G radio specification. In those trials, also for select customers, AT&T will stream DirecTV service to antennas on users' homes. Big Red actually announced at the Mobile World Congress previous year that it was going to conduct initial tests on 5G.

5G is expected to provide carriers with significantly improved broadband service, akin to cable connections, helping relieve network connections and meet the ever-increasing demand of customers for data.

"The tremendous progress we have made with Verizon in commercializing 5G represents our companies' mutual focus on delivering the highest level of innovation to our customers", said Woojune Kim, vice president of the next generation business team of Samsung Electronics.

The news of the trials comes shortly after Verizon announced its acquisition of XO Communications' fiber-optic network business earlier this year.

The FCC in July adopted new rules for wireless spectrum above 24 GHz - in the millimeter-wave band - that it said were aimed at enabling "rapid development and deployment of next-generation 5G technologies and services".
