Facebook introduces new weather forecast feature for mobile and desktop

Want to know if it'll rain tomorrow? Starting this week, Facebook has added a new weather feature to its mobile app.
It is said that the idea behind implementing this feature is to ensure that the users stay hooked onto the Facebook app.

"Facebook confirmed that the new feature was launched to around 95 percent of its global population this week", the report noted. A few years ago, Facebook added forecasts to events and public places, and it has been testing weather updates in News Feeds in the UK. You also can choose to display the temperatures in either Fahrenheit or Celsius. It is developed in collaboration with IBM-owned Weather.com API, which automatically detects user's current location and presents related results. Facebook also works with Ticketmaster and Eventbrite so people can buy tickets to events directly from the event page. You will be able to turn it on and off as per your liking.
The social media giant is also planning to provide an option for users to receive notifications for weather updates.
According to company's spokesperson, the objective behind the new weather section is "to develop products that connect people to the things they care about most". It's true, we do care about our weather. The latest update from Facebook might sound trivial but it is quite useful - Facebook Weather Updates! The weather section will set the current location as default and can also be changed in settings. The feature was integrated in Facebook's Android and iOS app, but it's also available on the web version, according to Tech Crunch. With messages like Good Morning, Good Evening, etc., users can see weather forecast by hours, along with general information like partly sunny, partly cloudy, rainy, etc., for next days. If the company takes it a couple steps further, it could become a real threat to similar standalone apps.
