Going home: Former President George HW Bush released from hospital

Former President George H.W. Bush was discharged Monday from Houston Methodist Hospital, his spokesperson Jim McGrath said in a statement.

The 92-year-old was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on 14 January, experiencing breathing difficulties.

Barbara Bush was also admitted to the same hospital just four days after her husband. They were "essentially therapy for each other", Dr. Clint Doerr, one of the physicians treating Bush, said last week.

Advanced age was of greater concern.

This is not the first time the elderly former president had a lengthy stay in a hospital.

Bush, the country's oldest living ex-president, had been working with physical therapists to build strength before his release, McGrath said.

McGrath says Bush is thankful for the prayers and kind messages he's received and for the "world-class care" from doctors and nurses at the hospital.

Their son, former President George W. Bush, attended the ceremony along with former First Lady Laura Bush.

"Barbara and I are so sorry we can't be there for our Inauguration on January 20th", Bush wrote on Jan. 10. Bush was hospitalized for exhaustion.
