Royal Rumble 2017: Five surprise entrants who could sizzle the WWE event

The WWE Royal Rumble 2017 edition will take place at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on on January 29, Sunday. This year there's added pressure too, because, if rumour is to be believed, WWE officials are itching to top the main event of New Japan's Wrestle Kingdom 11. Last year, Triple H made his return to the WWE ring and won the Rumble match, thus winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Goldberg perhaps? Braun Strowman or Brock Lesnar?

The Royal Rumble as a concept was only getting started with Royal Rumble 1990 being the third event of its kind in history.

There are 30 men entering the ring, but only one will reign at the massive pay-per-view in San Antonio next Sunday, with the victor becoming the number 1 contender for WWE World Championship or WWE Univeral Championship.

On Tuesday, SmackDown didn't blink, producing a powerful final message of its own heading into the Royal Rumble by utilizing almost their entire roster to build the hype for Sunday.

According to Give Me Sport, WWE chief Vince McMahon isn't interested in a match between The Undertaker and John Cena. In a recent blog post summarized by, Jim Ross praised the final segment before the Royal Rumble on WWE Raw.

Even at 48-years-old, Angle has kept himself in wrestling shape and has competed in matches across the world over the past 12 months. By booking a 30-minute women's Rumble match, all women on the roster are utilized, and it continues the momentum of the "women's revolution". That was one of the biggest turning points of his career from high potential superstar to regular main eventer. His only reasonable feud is one with Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship.

That's four consecutive nights of WWE wrestling in the same building. WWE wants it to be a big, memorable return, similar to John Cena's in 2008.

On the back of a stinging defeat to Goldberg at SummerSlam, Lesnar and his "advocate" Paul Heyman have talked of nothing but revenge.
