Ford Announces F-150 Hybrid, Mustang Hybrid, 300-Mile-Range EV SUV

Expect to receive more information about the Ford Mustang hybrid and Ford F-150 hybrid in the coming months. "Hybrids and electric vehicles are among the most incentive-laden, tax-credit heavy on the market now, and still those levers haven't moved the sales needle.", said Michelle Krebs, senior analyst for AutoTrader.

The hybrid Mustang will apparently only be available in North America, while the new F-150 will also be and in the Middle East. Essentially like the Toyota Prius, the new hybrid Mustang will use electricity generated by the vehicle itself while being driven which will be stored in a new and powerful battery pack.

Those electric vehicles are part of a larger effort - including a $4.5 billion investment - in exploring electrified vehicles, Engadget reported.

The money for this investment comes directly from Ford's decision to nix plans for a new $1.6 billion plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, which was expected to be the assembly facility for Focus and C-Max models bound for the US, among other markets. It is there that the new autonomous vehicle will be produced. The latest evidence of the luxe-truck phenomenon comes from Ford, which says that 71% of buyers in November opted for the higher grades of its new Super Duty heavy-duty pickup.

Ford also announced plans to invest $700 million to expand its Flat Rock Assembly Plant in MI to support the creation of high-tech autonomous and electric vehicles. Sales of the electrified Mustang will initially begin only for the North American market. Instead, it will invest US$700 million (A$1 billion) in its existing Flat Rock facility. The investment will target the production of high-tech electrified and autonomous vehicles, as well as the iconic Mustang and Lincoln Continental, the company said.

Six more vehicles are expected to be announced as the details of Ford's electrification plan are fleshed out.

We're just three days into 2017, and Ford has already put out what could be the biggest announcement of the year by declaring that it will build a hybrid Mustang by 2020.

A plug-in hybrid Transit Custom commercial van, available in Europe starting in 2019.

The impending inauguration of a president who's has cast doubt on global warming makes it an odd time to expand an electrified vehicle lineup, Krebs said.

There will also be an autonomous hybrid auto by 2021, designed for ride sharing and hailing businesses, two new hybrid police pursuit vehicles and a - get this - hybrid Ford Mustang.
